Asus 1015PEM Review

From outside, Asus Eee PC 1015PEM may look like just another 10-inch Asus netbook, but from inside it is much more powerful than most of the netbooks out there. The Asus 1015PEM is powered by the dual-core Atom N550 processor that is fully capable of playing back 720p video content properly.

Build, Design of the PC 1015PEM

The Eee PC 1015PEM measures 10.3 x 7.1 x 1.4-inches and looks similar to other Seashell netbooks by Asus. This means you will find the tapered look possessed by other Asus netbooks. The lid has a matte plastic that has a soft touch to it. It does picks up some fingerprints but they do not look crazy like the one on those netbooks with glossy lids.

Keyboard, TouchPad

The keyboard has not undergone any change compared to the rest of the Asus 10-inch netbooks. The chiclet keys are almost not full size, but are comfortable to my digits.

But, I do wish the right shift was of the same size as the left shift key. I found myself hitting the right fn key or the up arrow key everytime I wanted to press the right shift key.

The touchpad is quite spacious and responds well to the multi touch gestures though dedicated left and right mouse buttons would have made the experience even better. Other than that, the mouse buttons feel great.

Performance of the Asus 1015PEM

The 1015PEM is the first Asus netbook to sport the dual-core Atom N550 1.5GHz processor. It managed to get a score of 1,728 in the PCMark05 test. This is more than the netbooks equipped with single-core Atom processors (Atom N450, N455) that score 1,300 in the same test. Same is the story in the GeekBench test where it scored 1,076 while the single core netbooks scored 980.

Even though it uses the same graphic chip as found in single-core netbooks, it yielded better performance thanks to the small boost given by that extra core. It scored 149 in 3DMark06.

Here are the scores of Windows Experience Index (3.0):

  • Processor: 3.1
  • Memory: 4.5
  • Graphics: 3.0
  • Gaming Graphics: 3.0
  • Hard disk: 5.8

Some technical information: The Atom N550 has a TDP of 8.5 watts. On the other hand, Atom N455 has a TDP of 6.5 watts – 2 watts less than its dual core brother. Atom N455 can process 2 threads at a time while the Atom N550 can work with 4 threads.

The 1015PEM easily played 720p Youtube videos (yes, Fullscreen as well!), but chocked while playing 1080p videos.

Battery Life

In my typical web-browsing test, where I surf the Internet and check emails, it gave me 6.5 hours of runtime. Then, I used the batteryeater app to check the battery life under worst circumstances (maximum load). It still managed to gave me a good 3 hours 35 minutes with Windows 7 High performance and Asus super performance mode.

If you are willing to spend a bit more, you should definitely give Asus 1215N or Asus Lamborghini VX6 a quick glance and if you are in the market for a budget netbook, check out Asus 1005PX which can be found for less than $300 at most electronic stores.

Looking for a powerful tablet with 10.1-inch display? Make sure to check out the Fujitsu T580 – it packs Core i5!
